Aloy Ejimakor, the special counsel of the leader of the indigenous people of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, reacted to the case linking the suspended police deputy commissioner, Abba Kyari, to a suspected cybercriminal, Abbas Ramon, popularly known as Hushpuppi .
Kyari is under investigation for alleged involvement in a $ 1.1 million internet fraud allegedly perpetrated by Hushpuppi.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, had claimed that Kyari had detained a Kelly Chibuzor at Hushpuppi’s request for a month to allow the latter and his co-conspirators to rob their Qatari victim of more than a million dollars.
Police Inspector General Usman Baba later confirmed receipt of the FBI’s allegations against Kyari and set up a panel to investigate the cop.
But Malami’s aide had said the AGF office had yet to receive any communication from the FBI or the Nigerian police regarding the arrest warrant issued against Kyari. The AGF Office is responsible for matters of extradition, repatriation and transfer of suspects or wanted persons.
His words: “There is no official communication to this effect. Everything will be done according to the rule of law and on the basis of the precepts of the existing provisions of the law ”.
Commenting, Ejimakor told Punch it is unfair that Federation Attorney General Abubakar Malami (SAN) hastily extradited the head of the IPOB from Kenya to Nigeria, but the Justice Minister said the arrest warrant issued for Deputy Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari of the US Federal Bureau of Investigation will follow due process.
His words: “I don’t want to compare apples with oranges, but what I can say is that the difficulty through which the United States seeks to transfer Abba Kyari to the United States illustrates what Nigeria would have. had to do in the case of Nnamdi Kanu. . Kanu would likely have been transferred by Kenya if extradition proceedings had been initiated against him.
“What America accuses Abba Kyari of committing is clearly extraditable under Nigerian and United States law because the offenses relate to money laundering, bribery, corruption and all that.
“I am not arranging a judgment on Abba Kyari whether he committed it or not, but the lesson that everyone must learn, whether someone is playing the tribal card or not, is: why could anyone -he believe that Abba Kyari deserves due process and the same person turns around and gloat over the illegal transfer otherwise known as the extraordinary rendition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and also seeks to rejoice in the attempted illegal transfer (Sunday ) Igboho from the Republic of Benin?
“This sort of thing indicates the deep fault lines in Nigeria. Someone from part of the country thinks it is okay to catch someone from another country without due process and bring them to Nigeria to answer for politically motivated offenses, but it is okay that Another country submits to due process search in transfer of citizen from Nigeria to United States. It is a very deep contradiction.
