A man has trapped what authorities believe is the longest Florida alligator on record.

Ildlife officials say the 14-foot creature captured by Robert Ammerman weighed 654 pounds and was captured on November 1, the last day of the Florida alligator harvest, in Lake Washington.

Mr Ammerman said the alligator struggled and pulled his boat for about 45 minutes after being speared and took two hours to tow to the dock.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission said the previous record was a slightly shorter alligator, which was trapped in 1997. The heaviest alligator on record in the state, which weighed 1,043 pounds, was caught in 1989.

Mr. Ammerman works as a medic, but he traps alligators in his spare time.
