A man has been charged with a racist message posted on social media after the Euro 2020 final.
Scott McCluskey, 43, of Runcorn, will appear in court next month for sending an offensive / abusive message through a public communications network, a Cheshire Police spokesperson said.
The force said the accusation was linked to a Facebook post on Monday, July 12 – the day after England lost to Italy in the Euro 2020 final at Wembley.
McCluskey is scheduled to appear in Warrington Magistrates’ Court on September 8.
A police investigation was opened following England’s loss when racist comments, targeting black players including Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, appeared on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
Speaking at the time, Mark Roberts, Chief Constable of Cheshire Constabulary and Chief Football Officer of the National Council of Chiefs of Police (NPCC), said: “Hate crimes in any form whatsoever do are simply not acceptable.
“The racial abuse targeting our own players after Sunday night’s game was utterly heinous and has rightly shocked and dismayed people across the country.
“The members of the England squad have been true role models throughout the tournament, conducting themselves with professionalism and dignity.”
