Man City ‘failed’ to sign Barcelona star after Ronaldo panic at Man United

Manchester City have reportedly ‘failed’ in their attempt to sign Barcelona striker Ansu Fati as panic set in when it became clear that Cristiano Ronaldo would join rival United.

City are rumored to be close to signing Ronaldo before some United legends step in and persuade him to come “home”.

And it sparked desperation in City, according to Sports world, who claim Pep guardiola himself contacted Jorge Mendes, Fati’s agent, to inquire about the possibility of signing the teenager.

Mendes was already in Manchester to meet United to iron out the terms of Ronaldo’s deal.

However, this claim seems unlikely for a number of reasons.

First, Guardiola calling any agent directly, let alone Mendes – a man he would have very little time for – is incredibly dubious.

Second, separate reports state that the Man City boss specifically asked the board not to engage with the agent over Fati to avoid upsetting Barcelona.

And third, why would City panic for a player who costs € 100million and is unlikely to start as much given the ridiculous abundance of options Guardiola has to play in similar positions.

Mendes would also have raised the possibility of Fati moves to United in talks over Ronaldo’s sensational return to Old Trafford – they would have been interested in the 18-year-old in the summer of 2020.

These talks were described as “something normal” and Barcelona had made it “very clear” that Fati remained “non-transferable” – he was never going to leave.

The Red Devils, like City, were nothing put a pawn in Mendes’ offer to land a new contract for his client with the La Liga team.

And it looks like Mendes’s angling has worked, with several reports claiming Fati is set to be awarded a stellar new contract by the Spanish giants.

Just as Mendes used Man United, the Spanish media are using the rumors as proof of Fati and Barcelona’s commitment to each other.

And a separate Sports world report (via Sport Witness) claims that the rejection of a € 100million offer from United proves the dedication of both sides.

Guys, that didn’t happen …
