Evans Kamau, 37, was arrested in Kenya for allegedly stabbing his ex-wife to death.
On Sunday August 8, 2021, the suspect allegedly stabbed Esther Njigi Nyaga 17 times at her home in Everest Estate, Juja, Kiambu County. She died on the way to Thika level 5 hospital.
Due to domestic disputes, the couple divorced in 2019 after nine years of marriage. Esther, who worked as a nurse at Muruka Dispensary in Kandara, Murang’a County, has since been raising their three children as a single mother.
According to reports, the suspect entered Esther’s house through the back door on Sunday evening and cut power to the main switch.
Evans would then have locked Esther in her room and would have committed the heinous act before fleeing the scene.
The eldest child who died, an 11-year-old girl, sought help from a neighbor, who helped transport Esther to hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries.
Purity Gathoni, a neighbor, said the child knocked on their door and asked if she could help transport her mother to hospital.
Gathoni said that when asked what happened, the young girl revealed that her father allegedly stabbed their mother.
“We found her in her room, face down in a pool of blood. Esther told the ambulance driver that her ex-husband, Evans Kamau, had stabbed her several times. Gathoni explained.
According to Juja’s Criminal Investigations Directorate (DCIO) officer Richard Mwaura, the court has authorized police to detain the suspect while investigations continue.
