Jethro DeVane retaliates after police break into his South Carolina home. The 71-year-old filed a December 21 lawsuit against the town of Rock Hill after a police camera published of the heartbreaking incident.
On June 3, 2019, DeVane claimed he was asleep when he heard a commotion at his back door.
After getting up to see what was wrong, DeVane said he saw a contingent of police from Rock Hill light up his house.
He came to the door and “he alleges that the officers pointed a gun at him, led him outside and began to search his house as he was insulted and forced to remain on display in the public”, ABC reports.
DeVane said at a press conference on Tuesday (December 22): “That night I woke up in a nightmare. [An officer] had his gun drawn, he said. I did what the man said. He has the gun, I don’t. He could have taken my life in a minute.
The Rock Hill Police Department explained its actions in a statement saying the 71-year-old was “detained by police for security reasons” and the police “carried out a protective sweep of the residence” .
They are said to be looking for four suspects who broke into a car and, for some reason, believed the minors had run into DeVane’s residence.
The complaint also states that officers, “did not even know and did not even ask for the name of the plaintiff until he was forced to leave his home at gunpoint completely naked then. that he was insulted and kept completely naked outside his home at gunpoint while officers searched his home.
DeVane had previously filed a complaint with the city, which was reportedly dismissed.
He is now asking for a public apology from the Mayor of Rock Hill, John Gettys, and additional officer training must be implemented.
