It is unlikely that Manchester United's search for a center-back will take them to Toby Alderweireld, with the Spurs defender's release clause over.
At midnight last night, there are only two weeks left in the transfer window. The Alderweireld release clause of 25 million pounds sterling no longer applies.
With Leicester's ever-fanatic Man United, Harry Maguire, their backup option would now be much more expensive. Maguire is more in tune with the new policy of Executive Vice President Ed Woodward.
Their last two dedications reveal it. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James. The two British, both 21.
After finalizing the Wan-Bissaka deal, Telegraph reported an email from Ed Woodward leaked to club staff, indicating that Man United's transfer targets would be in line with their "long-term vision".
The prospect of excessive spending for Alderweireld is always a possibility given the club's history. In 2013, they signed Marouane Fellaini for £ 27.5m, which is £ 4m more than its buyout clause, which had expired in previous weeks.
At the time, it was thought that Woodward thought he could protect it cheaply, but when it would be the work of Tottenham President Daniel Levy, this idea would be even more fanciful.
For Manchester United, it seems that a 26 year old English back merits to be given priority over a 30 year old Belgian.
Speaking during the Spurs' pre-season tour in China, Alderweireld had said on a possible move, "the release clause is exhausted and again, anything can happen". Now this is no longer the case.
