Manchester United has contacted Lille about the availability of goalkeeper Mike Maignan and charged him a fee of 35 million euros.
The 23-year-old Frenchman made 42 appearances in all competitions last season, leaving 17 blank sheets in the process.
Maignan was rewarded for his excellent performance in Ligue 1, where he was named goalkeeper of the year by the union of French professional footballers for his 15 sheets clean in the league, when Didier Deschamps included for the first time in his senior team Euro 2020 Qualifications this month.
Lille finished in second place behind Paris Saint-Germain by 16 points this season.
The Red Devils' investigation into the availability of Maignan shows the uncertainty of Solskjaer on the future of Spanish goaltender David de Gea, whose contractual situation has not been resolved.
The 28-year-old is said to be evaluating his options before next season.
Maignan has sparked the interest of players like France champion PSG and Ajax outside the Premier League, the Dutch champions looking to potentially replace Andre Onana.
The black horses of the Champions League this season have recently rejected United's offer for Onana of the amount of 35 million pounds sterling.
In light of the negotiations between United and Ajax, Lille has increased its initial valuation of 25 million euros from the well-rated youth.
United also hopes Barcelona substitute goalkeeper Jesper Cillessen will be another potential target to succeed De Gea.
De Gea, who was voted the number one goaltender in the Premier League in five of the past seven seasons, was frustrated and disappointed by United's refusal to match the financial terms paid to Alexis Sanchez.
