DANIEL JAMES was 40 years old at Manchester United to welcome him to Manchester United – but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Ed Woodward did not show up.

The winger, 21, became Norway's first rookie as the boss of Old Trafford when he made his £ 15m transfer from Swansea last week.

According to the Mail, however, the manager did not show his face when James was unveiled at Carrington.

It is believed that several player liaison agents were present, as well as MUTV staff and a makeup artist.

But the two men who played such an important role in getting him through the door were not there to greet him.

Woodward would have agreed to multiply James's weekly salary by six times, from £ 4,000 to £ 67,000 a week.

James admitted that the day he signed for one of the biggest clubs in the world was "sad grief", although his father, Kevan, 60, died suddenly last month.

The 21-year-old said, "This is an incredibly proud moment for me and my family, but it is sad to regret that my dad can not share this experience with us.

"I look forward to working with Ole, meeting the team and getting started.

"The Premier League is the best league in the world and Manchester United is the perfect place to continue to evolve as a player."

Although he may not have been there to welcome his new recruit – who will surely be ready to fight with Anthony Martial for a place on the left – Solskjaer was very appreciative during the discussion on the transfer.

The manager said: "Daniel is an exciting young winger who has a lot of skills, a vision, an exceptional pace and a good work ethic.

"He had a great season with Swansea City and has all the attributes necessary to become a Manchester United player.

"We are delighted that he has signed with our club and we are looking forward to working with him.It is the ideal environment for Daniel to continue his development."
