Manchester United’s 1-0 win over Burnley might have taken them to the top of the Premier League, but this victory came at a cost.
Forward Anthony Martial appeared to twist his hamstrings in the closing moments of the game at Turf Moor, with the Frenchman immediately leaving the pitch to be replaced by Axel Tuanzebe.
At the time of writing, there has been no update on Martial’s injury, but at the very least, the Frenchman should be seen in doubt for Sunday’s top-of-the-table clash against Liverpool at Anfield.
And while that might pose a problem for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, it’s one that Gary Neville might think isn’t too hard to tackle.
Martial started on the left at Burnley with Edinson Cavani in attack, as Paul Pogba patrolled midfield with Nemanja Matic, eventually scoring the winning goal.
But if Martial is absent at Anfield then Pogba could be used on that left side, especially since many would expect Fred and Scott McTominay to return to midfield.
Former United defender Neville believes it is the best position for the World Cup winner.
“I really think Pogba is a lot better when he plays that left-front position because it frees him up,” Neville told Sky Sports when covering Burnley’s game.
“It makes him more like a maverick, he can go and do his little one-on-one, his little things.
“I think when he plays deeper he sometimes just stays still and plays and tries to look for the killer’s pass too early.
“Sometimes it comes off, but sometimes it gets too deep.”
United are expected to confirm the severity of Martial’s injury soon, with Matic also suffering from a groin problem late in the game at Burnley.
