Manchester United were allowed to sign the transfer between Pepe and Fernandes while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was determined to win the Premier League title.
The Red Devils have remained six years without the price they covet most and are determined to end their drought this season.
Solskjaer admitted that Manchester United was working on the signing, saying: "I am very happy with the two players we have recruited, but we must now be patient.
"It's a long way and it's very important that we get the right ones.
"We can not just take a different path if we run into an obstacle. My feelings are that I am not at all frustrated.
"I believe in these players. I'm sure we could do well but it's short and long term.
"We are working on something that we have identified that is improving our cold, but we have played well, performed well, had good results so far."
However, the Mirror say that United has no interest in Pepe and Fernandes.
It is said that the Red Devils were left irritated by the constant ties established with the players of Lille and Sporting Lisbon.
And they suspect that they are used by both clubs to increase the fees charged.
The news from United's position suggests that Solskjaer could have a slimmer team than initially planned.
The club needs at least one midfielder after the outings of Ander Herrera and Marouane Fellaini.
And a right winger is also wanted, although Daniel James has already landed.
Gerard Lopez, head of the Lille office, said Tuesday that Pepe's exit from the club was almost over.
"In terms of departures and arrivals, if a player goes away, we will go and get what we need," he said.
"For Nico, it's almost over and he could have gone last summer.
"It's true that he has great offers and great clubs for him, so I think [he will leave].
"Besides that, you never know in football."
