Manchester United has expressed interest in signing Saul Niguez, the target of Atletico Madrid, and could very well sign it as his rivals, Manchester City, have started looking for alternatives to the Spanish.
The 24-year-old has long been targeted by City, who considers him a suitable substitute for Fernandinho. However, Saul is under contract with Atletico until the summer of 2026, which may complicate any future deal for the midfielder.
The news of United's interest in Saul comes from ESPN, who says that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sees him as an ideal partner for both Nemanja Matic and Paul Pogba.
The Red Devils could be on the market for a new midfielder this summer. Ander Herrera would seriously consider a lucrative transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. His contract expires this summer and he would get closer to the exit door, United refusing to meet his high salary requirements.
They have been monitoring Saul for many years, but have been put off by his strong release clause, estimated at around 150 million euros. This award also delayed City rivals, and Pep Guardiola's players now consider their Atletico teammate, Rodri, as a viable transfer target.
The 22-year-old plays a role similar to Fernandinho's, while Saul is often deployed to a more advanced position. Guardiola wants a new defensive midfielder and now thinks Rodri could be the best option for his team.
Los Rojiblancos are desperate to keep Rodri at the club, but they are afraid of losing him because of his 70 million euro release clause. Guardiola believes that such a price is very reasonable for a talented 22-year-old player and could authorize the move as early as this summer.
He could be faced with competition from former employers, Barcelona, who have already seen him as a potential alternative to Sergio Busquets. However, the La Liga giants could pull out of the race to sign Rodri, Ajax midfielder Frenkie de Jong is expected to join the club at the end of the season.
