The Tottenham leader congratulated the Norwegian on his appointment – but would not discuss the rumors that linked him to the role

Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino congratulated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on his appointment as permanent director of Manchester United, a position with which he was previously linked.

Argentina, which had an excellent popularity rating, had every interest in taking up the job of Old Trafford when Jose Mourinho was sacked in December.

Even when Solskjaer was appointed acting leader until the end of the season, Pochettino was still considered one of the leaders of his permanent role this summer.

However, Solskjaer's impressive three-month episode in which the Red Devils won 14 of the 19 games played in all competitions led the Norwegian to a three-year permanent contract on Thursday.

Asked about the post, Pochettino refused to ask himself if he was really a candidate for the role, but he had some kind words to say about United's new permanent boss.

"I've never talked about rumors," said Pochettino. "I have to congratulate him and wish him all the best and he is now officially the new Manchester United manager.

"I will not talk about rumors and in this period, there will be more rumors, but I can not do anything about it."

"If that is not the case, the speculation will come from another club.We are so focused on our work."

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola also had some kind words to say about Solskjaer, now the permanent boss of his club's bitter rivals.

"United is still an incredible opponent, congratulations to Solskjaer, he has made incredible results and I wish him every success," Guardiola said.

The first Solskjaer match in permanent charge is against Watford at Old Trafford on Saturday.

The Reds currently rank fifth in the Premier League, two points behind Arsenal in last place qualifying.

Tottenham, from Pochettino, is only three points clear of third place, having seen his title deteriorate in recent weeks.

The Spurs were only five points off the top at the end of last month, but three defeats in four Premier League games have made them 15 points behind the leaders of Liverpool, to whom they are making face Anfield Sunday.
