Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand discussed with Ed Woodward the possibility of becoming the club's new sports director.
The Red Devils are restructuring behind the scenes and want to modernize their structure after falling behind their rivals since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013.
Metro.co.uk Mike Phelan is in talks to become the club's first technical director, but United wants another personality to oversee recruitment and develop off-site management strategies.
United have considered a long list of names with Metro.co.uk revealing earlier this week that Paul Scholes was considering playing a role in the new organization.
However, the Daily Mail claims that Ferdinand is the lead candidate and that the former club captain met Woodward to discuss his proposed role.
Ferdinand's role could be to oversee the negotiations on behalf of the club and carry out his transfer policy.
Phelan will work prospectively with Solskjaer to identify targets with Ferdinand to negotiate.
Ferdinand's past in the business world since his retirement would be positive for United, but his knowledge of the club and his traditions can not be doubted.
The former English captain joined United in 2002 and left in 2014 after winning ten major honors with the club.

United has contacted Ferdinand about a return to the past, but his off-field responsibilities have prevented him from returning to Old Trafford.
However, the club believes that Ferdinand is now better placed to engage in such a project.
