MANCHESTER UNITED is ready to open contract negotiations with Paul Pogba – in order to defend itself from Real Madrid.

But the star midfielder needs £ 500,000 a week to put him alongside Alexis Sanchez, the club's highest paid player.

Real boss Zinedine Zidane hopes to bring his French compatriot Pogba and Eden Hazard from Chelsea as part of his summer mission to Bernabeu.

But while Pogba, 26, is considered flattered by the prospect of moving to Madrid, United will do everything in its power to keep the midfielder.

And that means it must be agreed with the boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that Pogba must remain a key part of the US team in the long run.

The current agreement between Pogba is two years old, although United has the option to extend it by 12 months.

The Red Devils may, however, be willing to extend their term of office by three years, linking Pogba to Old Trafford until 2024.

Pogba's agent, Mino Raiola, is aware that his player is in high demand and will push United to the limit when negotiations begin next week.

Any new deal would require a huge salary increase, with Pogba currently having £ 300,000 a week, well below the £ 505,000 Sanchez flop.

Raiola is also deeply aware of Solskjaer's desperate desire to retain Pogba while United is on the verge of losing the contractless couple Ander Herrera and Juan Mata.

Meanwhile, Sanchez's stay at Old Trafford is about to end if the club can find a buyer.

All this puts Pogba and his agent in the foreground, but for United, winning the battle with Real is seen as a statement of intent and essential ambition.
