We all know how the transfer market goes for Manchester United. As soon as anyone in the world hits a football, the Red Devils prepare their checkbook.
Finally, once you've gone through all the ridiculous rumors (including this £ 50m (story of John McGinn), you only have a few real targets left. Many midfielders have found their way into United's radar and club officials now have a decision to make.
There are good ideas and others that are not so good. Here is an overview of five of United's main targets this summer and why a move for each of them should (or should not) be in their plans.
Bruno Fernandes
What will it bring?: Goals, goals and more goals. Oh, and did I mention the goals? He was directly involved in 50 goals last season, scoring 32 and creating 18 more. He loves to break ahead and take a pbad, and he has a soft spot for the long-range shooter. If United needs an extra advantage in the middle of the field, Fernandes is the ideal candidate.
Advantages: He was breathtaking in one of the best European leagues and even did his best in the Europa League. There is no doubt about his abilities and at age 24 he could easily continue to improve.
The inconvenients: The Red Devils could be caught in a bidding war for Fernandes, who is certainly not ideal. Many superstars have failed in the Premier League and it is still possible that Fernandes will become an expensive regret.
Probability: They want it and they can afford it. It's as simple as that. 8/10
Cost: £ 53 million.
Sergej Milinkovic-Savic
What will it bring?: Almost everything. He scores goals, he recovers aids, he can dribble and he can attack. Milinkovic-Savic is about as complete as you'll ever see.
Advantages: His imposing cadre would fit perfectly into the physical Premier League and he already has a few years of high profile experience to his credit. The potential that he has shown is scary, and his current level is not that bad either.
The inconvenients: If only we could forget last season. On paper, it was a huge step backwards for Milinkovic-Savic, who was struggling to make his way through the goals of Lazio. He may have been deployed in a more reserved role, but he has practically lost everything that has made him so special in the past. Hopefully only once?
Probability: Unless its price goes down further, United will probably continue to look elsewhere. 5/10
Cost: £ 72 million.
Mario Lemina
What will it bring? A lot of experience, having already shot in England, Italy and France. His physical and defense skills were a great advantage for Southampton and his former Juventus side, but he also managed to keep the ball rolling to make things happen for his team-mates.
Advantages: Southampton is actively seeking that he leave. He's not even part of their pre-season team, and if that does not scream "potential market", then I do not know what will do it. Its value decreases every minute, which should be music for United's ears.
The inconvenients: He's good, but he's not this well. He is not one of the big names fans have called for, and he does not bring the level of goals and help that United needs a new midfielder.
Probability: If all their other targets repelled them, they could do a lot more harm than pick Lemina. But it's certainly not their first choice. 3/10
Cost: £ 20 million.
James Maddison
What will it bring?Youth and excitement. The 22-year-old is a versatile midfielder who likes to fly forward and attack. Whether to score a goal or to train a teammate, Maddison makes excellent decisions on the pitch and the results are incredible.
Advantages: Maddison is all that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking for. He is young, he is English and he is really very good. His level of chance creation is exactly what United is looking for, and signing it would guarantee almost ten years of excitement at Old Trafford.
The inconvenients: Leicester City does not want to lose it, and that's understandable. He is one of the most intriguing English talents and his price testifies to this.
Probability: The Fox are not dealing with this case unless United comes with a huge offer. With so many other goals in mind, do not expect Maddison to move to Old Trafford soon. 2/10
Cost: £ 70m.
Christian Eriksen
What will it bring? Eriksen is the most established name on this list. Super pbader, Eriksen can pull the strings of any team. He has a vision and technical ability that gives his team an advantage they did not even know was missing.
Advantages: If United needs energy, it will not be bigger than Eriksen. He has been an elite talent for years, providing many goals and audiences in Tottenham Hotspur. Eriksen can clearly dominate in the Premier League, so the chances of not adjusting to life in Manchester are slim.
The inconvenients: Everything is a question of money. Daniel Levy will try to squeeze any penny possible for Eriksen, while his salary demands will only add to the considerable cost of the overall operation.
Probability: With so many other affordable options, United will surely not intend to pay for Eriksen. That being said, he is one of the best players on the market and it would definitely be a statement. 4/10
Cost: At least £ 80m.
