MANCHESTER UNITED has identified Ajax's goalkeeper, Andre Onana, as a possible successor to David de Gea.

The number one Old Trafford, 28, has resisted all offers of a new deal and has more than 12 months to his existing contract.

The club 's position was that they would prefer to let it go for nothing in the summer of 2020 than to sell it during the current closing season.

However, he had a troubled end to the campaign, accused of a series of notorious mistakes as the season of his club plunged under his nose.

And this can be taken into account if a serious offer for De Gea arrives before the end of the transfer deadline in August.

A substantial offer would give Ed Woodward and the American hierarchy a big decision to make – so they started planning for that opportunity.

Jan Oblak, of Atletico Madrid, said that he would be willing to relocate to United once he left Spain, which will not fail to interest you.

But United was impressed by Onana's season, which helped the Dutch club reach the Champions League final just minutes.

The 23-year-old Cameroonian international would be a much more sensible option than Oblak, who commands a world record for a goalkeeper.

Onana would have cost around £ 40 million and he is in the right age range to be in United for the long haul.

If de Gea were to leave, Solskjaer would like to give number two Sergio Romero the opportunity to show that he is able to step up his efforts.
