Manchester United may try to finalize an agreement on Harry Maguire before the end of the week.
Maguire, defender of Leicester and England, is the main target of transfers from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who is looking to strengthen his defense this summer.
Two bids were rejected for Maguire, with Leicester retaining between £ 80 and £ 90 million, though United remains confident in reaching an agreement.
But they have designated Toby Alderweireld as a potential reserve option, if they can not reach an agreement with Leicester.
And the Telegraph reports that the Tottenham defender could have an impact on United's pursuit of Maguire.
Alderweireld has a release clause in his Tottenham contract that allows him to leave for only £ 25 million.
But this clause will expire Friday, while Daniel Levy would be willing to raise it from 15 to 40 million pounds for the Belgian defender.
And that means that Ed Woodward could finalize Maguire's signature before that time, in case he should return to Alderweireld.
United was tied to a crowd of defenders a year ago but was unable to attract any, which did not signal the beginning of the end to Jose Mourinho.
And Woodward wants to avoid a repeat of this summer with a new central defender, at the top of the list of people wanted by Solskjaer.
United boss also wants to bring a central midfielder, with targets Sean Longstaff and Bruno Fernandes.
The search for an attacking player may also intensify if Romelu Lukaku moves to Inter, even though the Italian side has not yet been evaluated by United.
