A former commercial diver who claimed that his partner had died to avoid paying his taxes was jailed for three years.

Tony Edward Cree has already pleaded guilty to fraud and was sentenced today by the Christchurch District Court.
Tax administration spokesman Tony Morris said Cree, through his company Civil and Marine Group Limited, had claimed more than $ 1 million in GST rebates to which he was not right.
"Cree repeatedly lied, he gave us false documents and information to try to validate the false TPS returns that he produced."
He applied for a GST rebate between December 2009 and January 2015, when the bank accounts of his company and his company did not show any expenses related to commercial activities.
"At one point, he claimed that his partner was sick and dead, which made it difficult for him to respond to IR's requests for information," Morris said.
That turned out to be fake too.
"His deliberate and deliberate acts showed total disregard for his tax obligations and those of his business."
