Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains what was wrong at Old Trafford last season and promises improvement

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that Manchester United's struggles last season were due to mental fatigue.

The Red Devils had a roller-coaster season including the dismissal of Jose Mourinho, a mini resurgence after the appointment of Solskjaer, but finally a disappointing sixth place.

United missed the line with a terrible run of five games without a win, but Solskjaer promised his team would improve on that term after an impressive pre-season campaign.

"It's encouraging so far," he told talkSPORT. "Everyone went on a summer vacation with a bad taste in their mouth and a disappointment with the end of the season.

"Football is an emotional game. It's always difficult when a new manager has to enter and the previous manager loses his job. But the players managed the situation well during the summer and they came back in shape and in good shape.

"I know how good the margins of football are and how good things can go from bad to bad. It's a mental game, everything is in the head.

"We have not managed the ups and downs well enough, we know it. This would be due to mental fatigue because the season was exhausting for everyone. But we will be better this year.

"We must improve and we must be better. The more we improve and the better we improve, the more chances we have to win trophies at the end of the season.

"These boys showed their abilities. If we stay on our guard, I can see ourselves improving a lot.

United has ignored relentless speculation on Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku's futures contracts to win their five pre-season friendly matches, including victories over Tottenham and Inter Milan.

But Solskjaer knows that the pre-season results will be next Sunday when United host Chelsea at Old Trafford.

"We were very satisfied. It's good to see the boys come back in pre-season in great shape, "he added.

"But again, no point has been awarded, and it does not matter when Chelsea comes to Old Trafford on August 11."
