The Manchester United coach who was driven to Perth Hospital Friday after a drug overdose is about to return home in the UK.

Mark Dempsey was taken by ambulance to the Royal Perth Hospital from his Crown Towers room on the eve of the Perth Glory match after being "sick overnight".

It was understood that Dempsey had not taken a drug overdose, but 7NEWS Perth reported Saturday that regardless of the drug used, the condition of the coach was serious enough to pump his stomach.

On Saturday night, Manchester United issued a statement confirming that Dempsey was still in the hospital, but that his release was scheduled.

"Mark Dempsey will leave the hospital as a result of an badessment and treatment," reads the release.

"Because of the intensity of the Tour program, we decided it was best for him to go home."

Susan, Mr. Dempsey's wife, told the British newspaper The Sun that he was dehydrated and exhausted due to intense training and jet lag.

Players and staff have been staying at the Crown Towers since their arrival Monday for their pre-season tour, which consists of two outstanding games against Perth Glory and Leeds United.

More than 50,000 fans gathered at Optus Stadium on Saturday night to watch Manchester United defeat Perth Glory 2-0.
