Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spent this summer changing things at Manchester United.
It was first of all the transfer strategy with a start different from the one the club had been used to since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure in 2013. Then came the changes in pre-season training, the team undergoing additional running exercises in order to get them. at a level that Solskjaer thinks they should be at. And then came a change of tactics.
The tour marked Jose Mourinho's favorite 4-3-3 start and was adopted by Solskjaer when he took over the Portuguese sacked in December while the Norwegian blocked with a 4-2-3-1.
The idea behind the training change is to give United a more offensive impulse. Solskjaer wants to stay true to the fastest way of fast, offensive and exciting football, and the Norwegian plans to do it with a strong press with his new formation.
An ideology that, on paper, corresponds exactly to what United fans would like to hear.
However, in reality, this new tactic will be successful thanks to two large signatures of money and there are only six days left in Solskjaer to do it.
United needs a strong defensive base to build his quick attacks, which he has not yet. Victor Lindelof is by far the best defender of the club and Eric Bailly seemed to be his partner from the start of the season, but a knee injury paid the price. At present, Solskjaer has more than a decision to make. Jones and Chris Smalling.
That's Jones who seemed more comfortable during the pre-season tour, but that clearly reminds that United needs a center before August 8th. Negotiations on Harry Maguire are continuing and the United hierarchy will surely have to realize that they will have to pay the odds of landing on the English international and make the new Solskjaer United image a success.
But buying a new center only completes part of the puzzle. The 4-2-3-1 formation will have a lot of success on the quality of the game of the titular midfielders, both by protecting the back line and by connecting the offensive game.
And based on pre-season performance, Solskjaer can not afford to neglect this last week of the transfer window. Nemanja Matic continued where he had stopped at the end of last season with his fragile form and Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay, who were excellent in the pre-season, prefer a more advanced role.
With a lack of defensive coverage in the middle of the field and a back line that is far from convincing, this is not the ideal base to build a new offensive and fast team.
For Solskjaer to execute his new plan, the club will have to spend and spend a lot. But they lack the time to do it.
