An interim coach at Old Trafford has overseen eight successive wins, but Norman Whiteside thinks it will take more to get the full-time position.
Manchester United have already decided to "change the manager at the end of the season," club legend Norman Whiteside said with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the preferred option.
The Red Devils saw the decision to leave the reins to a hero tripled their past offer rich rewards, with eight successive victories since the separation with Jose Mourinho.
A flawless opening to his mandate has led many to place Solskjaer in the lap to occupy the high level position permanently.
Publisher's choice
Whiteside, however, believes that United would need to be "stuck in a corner" to be able to make that call, with moves for confirmed artists such as Mauricio Pochettino or Zinedine Zidane considered more likely.
"I am pleased with United's form," said the former Red Devils leader at Belfast Telegraph.
"They are running well, but I still think the club is going to change the manager at the end of the season.
"Unless, of course, Ole wins the next 10 games and United is relegated to a corner.
"If Ole continues to win, I could eat my words because they may have to give him the job.
"Pochettino has been mentioned a lot, but he will not be the only one nearing the end of the season, I expect Zidane to be there and others to be interested.
"Some of the big guns in Europe are at risk of being sacked or leaving their clubs and it will be up to them to figure out who is up for grabs at the end of the season.
"United will then sit down to see what Ole has done and see what are the great managers available.
"I'm sure people on the top will have their own names and it will be interesting to see who they choose."
While suggesting that United will look beyond Solskjaer at his next meeting, Whiteside admits that the Norwegian has been very successful in restoring the confidence of key men who looked disappointed under Mourinho.
The Northern Irishman added, "People start running forward, going forward, getting into the box and doing things they did not do.
"The reins have been taken away from Marcus Rashford and he scores goals for fun and goals.

"Paul Pogba is now in the box and makes things happen and they have become like two new players.
"I only use them as an example because other players have also changed shape overnight. You can do whatever you want.
