The International Central Gospel Church (ICGC) made a check for 200,000 ¢ for the purchase of three Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for the three main mental health hospitals in the country.
General Supervisor of the Church, have reported figures of the Mental Health Authority (MHA) shows that the country loses about 18.55 billion ¢ of suffering related to mental distress each year.
Dr. Mensa Otabil revealed that the numbers are surprising and convincing.
Speaking Saturday after the 2019 Life Walk Health Program, he stated that this had informed their decision to acquire the machines for the hospitals.
The ECT machine, also known as the "miracle machine", is an essential life-saving equipment for the treatment of patients suffering from mental illness.
With more than 41 percent of the Ghanaian population struggling with mental health problems, the country's psychiatric hospitals are overwhelmed by a huge ratio of patients to doctors in inefficient or unavailable diagnostic machines.
Dr. Akwasi Osei, CEO of the Authority, thanked ICGC for its gesture and prayed for the church's ongoing support to the country's mental health needs.
