Discovering the racist slurs on the mural, the residents of Withington first covered them in plastic bags, before the English flags and the General Rashford-memories based on objects were stuck on the wall.
The actions of the local community quickly gained national attention and within a day the original artwork was repaired by artist Akse.
Rashford he himself addressed the actions of those involved in the initial restoration on his social media pages.
“Exceeded. Grateful. Lost for words,” Rashford posted.
