As Kondo puts it, "When you have young children, you need to make sure your household is tidy." The first episode is about the overworked parents, Rachel and Kevin Friend, whose dirty home issues weigh on their relationship. Throughout the episode, the couple talks about the pressures they face when trying to maintain a tidy household.
One of the major problems is the lack of time and energy, a source of tension and stress. Kevin works between 50 and 60 hours a week, leaving Rachel to the task of reconciling childcare and tidying up. Unfortunately, child care is a priority, which leaves him little time to clean up. This puts Kevin aside, which is rather sticky for a neat space. It is a vicious circle in which no one feels capable of doing household chores.
The couple has far too many items that contribute to clutter, which makes it harder to keep things organized.
