Marijuana consumers weigh less, defying "Munchies" – Eurasia Review

New evidence from Michigan State University suggests that those who
to smoke cannabis or marijuana weigh less than adults who do not.

The results, published in the International Journal of Epidemiology, are contrary to the view that marijuana users who have a serious case of nibbling will eventually gain more weight.

"Over a period of three years, all participants showed a weight
increase but it is interesting to note that those who used marijuana had less
increase compared to those who have never used, "said Omayma Alshaarawy,
lead author and badistant professor of family medicine. «Our study
based on the growing evidence that this opposite effect is occurring. "

The findings also suggest that new and persistent users are less likely to be overweight or obese overall.

"We found that users, even those who had just started, were more likely
to be at a normal weight and healthier and stay at that weight, "she said.
"Only 15% of persistent users were considered obese, compared with 20% of
nonusers. "

Researchers used data from the National Epidemiologic Survey of
Alcohol and related conditions and examined the body mbad index, or
BMI, out of 33,000 participants aged 18 and over, then compared
Numbers.

Although the difference in actual weight between users and non-users is
modest, about 2 pounds for a 5-foot-7 inch participant weighing about
200 pounds at the beginning of the study, the variance was prevalent among
the whole size of the sample.

"An average difference of 2 pounds does not seem like much, but we found
in over 30,000 people with all types of behaviors and
always got that result, "Alshaarawy said.

So, how does marijuana seem to affect weight?
Alshaarawy said he was still relatively unknown, but he could be
several factors.

"It could be something more behavioral, as if someone was becoming
more aware of their food consumption as they are worried about the munchies
after using cannabis and gaining weight, "she said. "Or it could be the
cannabis itself, which can modify the behavior of certain cells or receptors,
react in the body and can ultimately affect weight gain. More search
must be done."

Alshaarawy warns, however, that marijuana should not be considered a help to the plan.

"Too many cannabis-related health problems far outweigh
the positive, albeit modest, effects it has on weight gain, "she explained.
I said. "People should not see it as a way to maintain or even lose
weight."
