Mark Zuckerberg actually calls for content regulation, elections and privacy – TechCrunch

[ad_1]

The day has been busy for Facebook The editorials. Earlier this morning, Sheryl Sandberg broke the silence of the site around the Christchurch Mbadacre and Mark Zuckerberg is now calling on governments and other agencies to tighten the regulations with regard to the type of data traffic on Facebook. He hopes to face the heavy rules. and take a seat at the table to shape it.

The founder published a letter simultaneously on his own page and on the Washington Post, the latter being an ideal way to make his feelings known on all the offices located in the hallway. Two years later, Zuckerberg noted that if he had to start again, he would require increased external oversight in four key areas:

  • Prejudicial Content – It wants rules and general benchmarks to measure social applications
  • Electoral Integrity – He wants the government to clearly define what constitutes a political announcement
  • Privacy – He wants global GDPR-like regulations that can impose sanctions on violators
  • Data Portability – It wants users to transfer their information from one application to another

The story of why the letter is broken is somehow the recent history of the social network. The struggles and missteps have defined much of Facebook's last years, with many controversies swirling around the social network at times. Not all CEOs are invited to testify before Congress. Facebook hosts and controls an incredible collection of data, playing a key role in everything from targeting ads and interpersonal relationships to information cycles and elections.

"Legislators often tell me we have too much power over the word, and I frankly agree with that," writes Zuckerberg, three days after the general ban on "white nationalism" and "separatism." White". He then describes the work of the government business, alongside the establishment of an independent oversight committee, before anyone can blame the company for completely overturning the ball.

"One of the ideas is that third-party organizations set standards for the distribution of harmful content and measure companies against those standards," writes Zuckerberg. "The regulation could lay down the basis for what is prohibited and require companies the bare minimum."

Zuckerberg continues to push for increased legislation on electoral manipulation and political advertising. The US Department of Housing and Urban Development hit Facebook earlier this week with accusations that its targeted advertising contravened the Fair Housing Act.

The opinion letter sounds a little hollow, though, because there are a lot of things that Facebook could do to improve in these four areas without the help of the government.

Facebook's harmful content policies have long been confusing, inconsistent and isolated. For example, Infowars conspiracy theorist Alex Jones was removed from Facebook but not from Instagram. Meanwhile, bad actors can simply move from one social network to another to broadcast problematic publications. Facebook should apply the application of its rules to the entire family of applications, publicly define its logic and explain why it suppresses or not things instead of letting these discussions run, and cooperate more. with other social networks to coordinate the removal of the worst consequences. the delinquants.

Regarding the integrity of the elections, Facebook made great progress this week by placing all its active and old inactive ad campaigns in a keyword-driven ad library. But after the pressure of news publishers who did not want their ads promoting politicized articles to be included alongside traditional campaign ads, Facebook has exempted them. These advertisements can still influence the electorate and, although they must be clbadified separately, they still need to be archived for research purposes.

In terms of privacy, well, there is still a lot to do. One of the key areas in which this could be improved is to allow people to avoid further research, including their telephone number, to avoid harbaders. And better controls should be available for the way that Facebook uses your contact information once downloaded into the address books of other users.

Finally, with data portability, Facebook is dragging its feet. A year ago, we published a detailed badysis of how Facebook only allows you to export your social chart as a list of friendships that it is difficult to. use to find them on other social networks. Facebook must make its social graph truly interoperable so that users do not lose their community if they change their application. This would force Facebook to better treat users because leaving would be a viable option.

By taking these steps, it would be apparent to regulators that Zuckerberg is not content with mouthing in the hope of getting a lenient sentence. This would demonstrate that he is ready to make changes that serve society.
