Mohammed Adjei Sowah, CEO of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly
The results of a fire investigation that destroyed about 150 stores in Odorna Market, Kwame Nkrumah Circle, indicated that hell occurred as a result of a faulty refrigerator.
According to Accra Metropolitan Executive Director, Mohammed Nii Adjei Sowah, the refrigerator caught fire in a wooden structure and spread to other market stalls.
The Odorna market, which had been hit by a fire, was partially opened Monday after its temporary closure to allow investigations.
In an interview with Citi News, Adjei Sowah warned operators against any activity that could trigger a fire in the market.
"One of the stores had two refrigerators, one of which was faulty and lit the fire. Unfortunately, it was a wooden structure, so it caught fire and spread very quickly. We want to make sure that some of these things do not happen in our markets. "
Some traders told Citi News that closing the affected part of the market would worsen their situation as they did not have other means of livelihood.
At the same time, the Klottey-Korley MP, Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, on whose territory the market is located, called for an immediate badessment of the structural integrity of the market in order to avoid future outbreaks. .
Salamatu Adams, market opinion leader, also wants the Metropolitan Assembly to prevent people from sleeping and cooking in the market.
In the incident last Wednesday, no casualties were reported, apart from the damage caused to merchants' merchandise by thousands of Ghana Cedis.
In the same market, a similar fire occurred in 2013.
