On January 30, Jamal N. Williams, WDEF-TV presenter in Chattanooga, Tenn., Tweeted a preview of Maroon 5 in rehearsal for the Super Bowl halftime show at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. .

And what is it on the big screen? That seems to be SpongeBob himself, probably in a clip from the season 2 episode where he performs at the Super Bowl version of Bikini Bottom.

An online Change.org petition requesting SpongeBob's song, Sweet Victory, to be performed at the half-time show garnered more than 1.1 million signatures. Why this song? In the episode of season 2 where it appears, SpongeBob performs the song with a fanfare at Bubble Bowl, the equivalent of his universe in the Super Bowl. He really shouts, too, a true style of power ballad.

A representative from Maroon 5 did not respond to a request for comment. But there is other evidence besides Williams' tweet. On January 13, the group tweeted a Super Bowl themed hype video, and SpongeBob made its appearance.

Further evidence that the Super Bowl could have a spongy influence: Many sites have shared what appears to be a series of Facebook posts from Rodger Bumpbad, which Squidward expresses in the series, announcing that Squidward will present the half-season. Bumpbad messages are not public and he did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
