Martinez congratulates Belgium "mature" after its victory on a very poor field in Cyprus

Roberto Martinez congratulated Belgium for its "very mature" performance in Sunday's 2-0 win over Cyprus's Euro 2020 qualification, despite seemingly unsatisfactory ground.

Belgium sent their visitors to Nicosia very easily when Eden Hazard – who played their 100th international match – gave them a fast lead.

Michy Batshuayi made the score 2-0 eight minutes later, which turned out to be quite satisfactory, with Belgium having subsequently ended the process and decelerated to the end.

Although some could have expected a bigger win for Belgium after just two minutes of over 18 minutes, Martinez was content with a relatively narrow victory.

"This type of match is difficult if you do not start well," Martinez told VTM. "Certainly, because the ground was very dry.

"Fortunately, we started well, with a lot of clarity and first two goals, and after the break we had control and played very well.

"The six points out of six are the perfect reward for our hard work, but nothing has been decided yet."

Batshuayi also stressed the importance of early goals, especially from a personal point of view.

"Goals are like vitamins for me, I live with them," he added. "It was difficult for me and for many other players.

"The circumstances were not ideal, on difficult ground, but we were efficient in the first half, which paid off with two quick goals.

The Red Devils defeated Russia 3-1 in their first qualifying match. Yuri Tielemans opened the scoring and Hazard scored two goals.

The win, combined with Sunday's 2-0 result, allowed Martinez's team to regain momentum following a 5-2 defeat by Switzerland against Switzerland, putting an end to the league season. Nations in November.
