There is a lot to like in superhero movies: stars, powers, VFX. but one of the best elements is by far the most comprehensive choice. The superhero costumes come with their own challenges. They must be made to measure, and the need to look good in both static poses and in action sequences. Costume creation can make or break a film: like the Afro-futuristic looks awarded by Ruth E. Carter Black Panther, or the ill-conceived digital combination of Ryan Reynolds for The Green lantern.

Andy Park, director of visual development and concepts at Marvel Studios, shared some of the secrets of his latest collaboration: Carol Danvers costumes Captain Marvel. Park has become the benchmark for creating female characters, having worked on the looks of Black Widow, Scarlett Witch, Hela, Mante, Nebula and Wasp, in addition to Captain Marvel. And he would not have done otherwise:

"My whole career has been very focused on women and I am very proud of that. Growing up, my two favorite cartoon characters were Iron Man and Rachel Summers – from Phoenix (the daughter of Jean Gray and Scott Summers in an alternate universe). She was my favorite character because she is so powerful. In the 90s, my favorite TV show was Buffy. During the first ten years of my career – before becoming a conceptual artist – I am best known for drawing Tomb Raider comics. I am therefore very proud and honored to be able to work on the first female superhero co-leader (Wasp) and on the first (Captain Marvel). "

Park shared some of his favorite keyframes of the film, as well as his thought process behind the eyes. Carol's costume contains so many details that you might miss at first glance. Oh well, one more reason to watch it again!

To StarForce! I've done a bunch of creations that were further away from her final hero look. But stick to the hero costume with diff colors was approved by #AnnaBoden @ fleckryan1 This then became the basis for the rest of StarForce that were designed by @IanJoynerArt #CaptainMarvel pic.twitter.com/uyvmpAYoz3

It's one of my favorite keyframes that I've been able to illustrate on Captain Marvel. I love the calm and tranquility of this moment. I usually do more action-type keyframes, so it was nice to do it to change. #CaptainMarvel #thanos #following @brielarson @MarvelStudios pic.twitter.com/tyM5xAiNvr
