De Ligt was instrumental in this race, United apparently aiming to defeat their defense.
However, with several high profile clubs interested, it now seems less likely than ever to get hold of the young player.
According to the Manchester Evening News, Dairio Sport reports that Matthijs can choose among the Red Devils, Juventus, Barcelona, PSG and Liverpool.
The four clubs have more to offer than Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's players, but some reports still claim he has an advantage.
Juventus and PSG can almost guarantee the title of champion while Liverpool has just won the Champions League.
Barcelona has looked for a successor to Gerard Pique and it is difficult to compete with them.
Meanwhile, Manchester United has only the Europa League football to offer and has virtually no chance of winning a trophy next season.
