Mauricio Pochettino could not help but smile after his best-prepared fire plans had been wiped out after three minutes of the Premier League 1-0 defeat at Bournemouth.
The Spurs missed the chance to be in the top four for next season as they had to play the better part of the 50 minutes with nine men in front of red cards for Son Heung-min and Juan Foyth.
They seemed to be holding on for what would have been the first draw of the season, but Nathan Ake's overtime lead gave the Cherries a deserved victory.

Tottenham's Heung-min was sent off in the first half for violent behavior
The visitors had full control in the first half and without goalkeeper Mark Travers, just 19, they would have been out of sight when his son was fired for violently attacking Jefferson Lerma.
Eric Dier is also lucky not to avoid a red card in the first half and Toby Alderweireld with a yellow card, Pochettino decided to bring back the duo at half-time, which allowed Foyth to start for Alderweireld.
But three minutes later, Foyth was back in the lodge after an overzealous tackle against Jack Simpson.
When asked if he had removed Dier to protect him, Pochettino said: "Both, and Toby too, because the action in the first period earned him a yellow card, and then Action that was almost a penalty with Hugo Lloris.
"There was a lot of risk, and with Sonny missing, we had to give the team new legs and try to avoid other yellow cards.
"But after three minutes, the plan did not work.
The story could have been completely different if the Spurs had not met a goalkeeper enjoying a dream start.
Travers received his first start in the Premier League and showed exactly what he was capable of with four remarkable saves in the first half to overturn Lucas Moura and Dele Alli twice.
This was decisive because it meant that Bournemouth was still at the same level at the time of the first red card.

For Bournemouth, goalkeeper Mark Travers produced an amazing show
Bournemouth's boss, Eddie Howe, was pleased with the impression his young man had made.
"It was a great demonstration from him, I think that's someone we really believe in," he said.
"As you saw him today, he has a good temperament, an excellent attitude towards the game. He played today as if it were a football match. a workout game and it's a huge compliment.
"He kicked the ball well, he obviously made the stops that he made, but it's his overall management of the game that was extremely impressive.
"It's a good problem, a good decision I'm going to have to make this summer regarding what I'm going to do with all the goalkeepers I have."
