Mauro Icardi refuses to play in Europa League after being stripped of the captaincy of Inter, leaving a doubt about the future

Mauro Icardi refuses to play for Inter Milan in his European League match against Rapid Vienna on Thursday after being stripped of club leadership.

The manager, Luciano Spalletti, decided to hand over the role of captain to goalkeeper Samir Handanovic, as the protracted contract negotiations between Icardi and the club became a source of distraction.

Icardi has been Inter's top scorer in each of the previous four seasons and has scored nine in this campaign, although his form has collapsed in recent weeks.

"The decision to remove the captain's armband from Icardi has been difficult and painful because we all know what it's worth for the team," said Spalletti, leading the draw.

"But it was divided between all parts of the club and was designed exclusively for the sake of Inter. Obviously, he took it wrong, but there are things that bother him and the team. "

The striker's contract is still two and a half years away, but club officials clashed with his wife and agent, Wanda Nara.

The situation of Icardi will undoubtedly be watched closely by all the great European clubs.
