LONDON: Plastic play has a new goal: Happy Meal toys.
A British petition asking McDonald's Corp. to drop the plastic toys included in the children's meals has collected more than 325,000 signatures and the country's environment minister has committed the case.
Increasingly attentive scrutiny shows how environmental concerns about plastic are increasing from single-use products, such as straws and coffee cups, to products that some consider useless or lifeless. The focus is no longer just on waste, but also on the impact of production on climate change.
Many toys, including those from Happy Meals, can not usually be recycled because they consist of several types of plastic, or plastic mixed with other materials. Parents say that these often end up in the trash.
