The announcement was posted on YouTube on December 6 and removed on Dec. 18 after the reaction online, but McDonald's Taiwan did not say whether it had removed the announcement because of events.
Earlier this month, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for "foreign interference" in relations between China and Taiwan. Beijing regards Taiwan as a province that is not entitled to international recognition as a separate political entity and has increased the pressure on multinational corporations to refer to Taiwan as part of China.
"Derogating from the principle of" single China "will make the situation of (strained) and chaotic relationships, which harms the interests of our compatriots in Taiwan," said Xi, according to an official English translation of a speech broadcast about the state media on January 1st.
Last week, the spokesman of Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen, Alex Huang, said he would not give up the pressure of China.
McDonald's China and McDonald's Taiwan had not responded to CNBC's requests for comment at the time of publication.
