Health officials in New Brunswick have reported five more confirmed cases of measles in the Saint John area over the past two days.
Two new cases were confirmed late Saturday. Both cases are related to a confirmed case previous to Kennebecasis High School.
Three new cases were confirmed late Sunday. Two are related to a previously confirmed case at Kennebecasis Valley High School. One of the new cases concerns a person recently present at the Emergency Department of the Saint John Regional Hospital.
This brings to eight the total number of confirmed cases in the Saint John area.
"Measles is a very serious disease and people need to understand the importance of contacting their health care provider, the Public Health Unit or 811 by phone before going to a clinic, doctor's office or doctor's office. in the emergency room, so that the necessary measures can be put in place to prevent further spread to others, "said Dr. Jennifer Russell, Chief Medical Officer of Health.
Those present at the Saint John Regional Hospital Emergency Department on the dates listed below were potentially at risk for measles:
- May 19th, 10:45 pm to 1:35 pm
- May 22, 8 pm to 11:05 pm
- May 24, 9:45 pm to 12:30 pm
- May 25, 3 pm to 7:30 pm
"Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease and can be prevented by vaccination," Russell said. "Vaccination is our best possible protection against measles."
