MIn Europe, fry infections peaked in ten years in 2018, despite the higher number of children than ever vaccinated before.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 82,500 people have caught measles in 2018, resulting in the hospitalization of two-thirds of these people and the deaths of 72 people.
The total number of infections last year is 15 times higher than the record low two years ago and three times higher than the total number reported in 2017.
Measles, a highly contagious viral disease common in children, causes a rash and a high fever. But in severe cases, the complications of the disease can lead to blindness, pneumonia and death.
Despite the availability of safe and cost-effective vaccines since the 1960s, more than 100,000 people die from this disease each year worldwide, the majority of whom are children under five in developing countries.
But while the disease had virtually disappeared in most developed countries, it has recently returned to revenge, thanks in part to growing hesitancy about vaccines.
