The 18 registered cases "are mostly young adults working at the station this season," said the regional health agency ARS for the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes district.
He recommended that parents ensure that they and their children are vaccinated against this highly contagious disease, as thousands of families prepare to hit the slopes during winter school holidays in the coming weeks.
Beyond the outbreak in Val-Tho, as skiers call it, the agency said that 12 more cases had been recorded in the area since Feb. 4.
Cases have increased in France and in other developed countries in recent years, due to the reduced number of children vaccinated against a viral disease causing rashes and inflammation that can quickly be fatal.
The ARS has only registered eight cases in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region in 2016, which rose to 45 in 2017 and to 84 last year.
