After a measles outbreak in Bulgaria, the country's health minister, Kiril Ananiev, urged parents to vaccinate their children.

"Vaccinate your children. Vaccines are not the enemy of your children. Vaccines protect children from acute illnesses that can have an effect later, when they grow up, "Ananiev said in a television interview.

He said that the necessary measures had been taken to control the measles contagion.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Health has sent detailed instructions to the regional health inspection services and the necessary vaccines are available if additional vaccinations are needed.

On February 15, 21 cases of measles in Bulgaria were confirmed. Most were children from Blagoevgrad district who had not been vaccinated against the disease.

On February 16, information from Blagoevgrad indicated that the condition of a 27-year-old man infected with measles had deteriorated. He was transferred to the intensive care section of the Blagoevgrad Hospital, said Vesselka Momcheva of the Regional Health Inspectorate.
