NEW YORK (AP) – Measles cases in the United States continue to rise and most of the reported diseases are in children.

Health officials said 465 measles cases had been reported this year since last week. That's 387 the week before.

The numbers are preliminary. The 2019 count is already the highest since 2014, when 667 were reported. The highest number of cases previously was 963 in 1994.

Epidemics have affected several states, including California, Michigan and New Jersey. New York City was responsible for about two-thirds of the cases reported in the United States last week.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention updated the figures on Monday.

About 80% of cases are 19 years old or younger.

The CDC recommends that all children receive two doses of measles vaccine.

He says the vaccine is 97% effective.
