MediaTek Announces 5G 7nm with Cortex-A77 Processor and Upcoming Mali-G77 Graphics Processor

MedaTek is making a rather unusual announcement today: the company is the first to announce a SoC with a built-in 5G modem. What's even more interesting is that the new silicon is the first announced project to use the all-new Cortex-A77 cores and the new Arm's Mali-G77 graphics processor, announced just two days ago.

The peculiarity of today's announcement is that it is a relatively early advance announcement. MediaTek does not disclose the actual product name of the new SoC and does not go into the specification details. What is disclosed is that the chipset is built on TSMC's new 7 nm process node and integrates the IP address of the MediaTek Helio M70 modem.

The M70 modem supports 5G NR in the sub-6GHz spectrum with carrier aggregation up to 2x. The modem supports both stand-alone and non-autonomous 5G network architectures. It should be noted that we will not see MediaTek's mmWave so early: in the markets where the company sees the SoC, we will not see the mmWave networks deploying for several years, and generally in the United States. with the first deployments of mmWave while the rest of the world focuses on coverage below 6 GHz.

The use of Arm's new Cortex-A77 and Mali-G77 graphics processors means that the SoC will have the most up-to-date intellectual property at the time of publication, which MediaTek has not been able to achieve in a few seconds. generations. In addition to the processor and graphics processor, MediaTek will use its third-generation APU design, which uses the company's internal IP address.

Finally, the imaging capabilities of the SoC would have been significantly improved and now support 4K60 decoding and coding, as well as ISP 80MP capabilities.

We do not know much about the SoC or the targeted product category, but we expect that MediaTek will still target the midrange. We should see devices with the new SoC released in 2020.
