Meijer is now a place to drop unused or outdated prescription drugs.
The new consumer drug plan is available at all Meijer stores in Michigan.
A secure in-store kiosk will help customers get rid of drugs safely and for free. The kiosks are in the pharmacy areas.
"Meijer is delighted to be one of the first in our industry to offer a safe and convenient prescription drug retrieval program in every store in the communities we serve," said Jason Beauch, Vice President of President of Meijer Pharmacy. "The Meijer Medication Resumption Program allows our clients to eliminate the risk of an unplanned accident with expired or unused medications, while allowing them to properly eliminate prescription drugs and reducing risks of risks to public health.
During pharmacy hours, clients can access their medications, including opioids, controlled substances and over-the-counter medications.
Meijer's pharmacists will work in partnership with Inmar Rx Returns to properly document, transport and dispose of medications.
According to the 2016 DEA National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.2 million Americans abused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that most of the abused prescription drugs come from family and friends, often from the home's medicine cabinet.
