1) The Ryder Cup begins Friday after a three-year hiatus due to a pandemic. Europe won impressively last time at the Golf National, with a clear foursome sweep on Friday. Here’s Henrik Stenson and Justin Rose in the lead, and Europe’s winning moment on Sunday, as Francesco Molinari defeated Phil Mickelson. The United States was rampant when it was last welcomed in 2016, however, and Ryan Moore claimed victory. The competition often traded a bit of spice, of course, so here’s a slice of the Battle of Brookline in 1999, when emotions were running high on both sides of the rope. Pressure is of course another ingredient in the Ryder Cup, so here’s a compilation of 10 memorable pressure putts. The first time Europe competed as a whole was in 1979, losing 11-17. It all started more than half a century ago, with only one team from Great Britain competing, and here are some images from Pathé News of that first action.
2) English football lost one of its greatest last weekend, with the death of Jimmy Greaves at the age of 81. Let’s savor his finishing genius with some of his best goals at Tottenham and here he is doing business for Chelsea. He also graced the West Ham frontline, scoring a couple in that Manchester City beating. Here’s a 1969 BBC documentary about the striker, while he was still at Tottenham. He became an extremely popular figure in broadcasting after his playing career ended, of course, whether that was having fun with Ian St John on Saint and Greavesie or recounting TV reruns or weather forecasts.
3) “Yes … no … sorry” – a comedic run-out and an inadvertent backlash. Yet at least he didn’t breaking your own car windshield, or remove a catching released / double inflated exit.
4) The pre-fight press conference for Canelo Álvarez’s fight against Caleb Plant got a little slippery this week. Shades of Derek Chisora vs. Dillian Whyte over there. There are other scenes that nobody likes to see (that everyone likes to see) here.
5) Other animal high jinks in the field caught our attention: a goose invades the land in Macclesfield, and a midfield terrier excels in Bosnia. The two were better able to get along than this fan in Falmouth Town.
6) Sochi hosts the Russian Grand Prix this week, only the eighth edition of the modern era race (there were two in 1913 and 1914). Lewis Hamilton has dominated here, with four wins, the first in 2014. Here’s a guide to the track with the man himself, though not to everyone’s liking. It looks nice anyway. And here are five good moments from the race and Valtteri Bottas’ impressive victory in Russia last year.

2) The elements are taking over Attila Valter and Johan Price-Pejtersen at the road cycling world championships two years ago.
