Once again Christmas, the season of hope, love, sharing and forgiveness is with us. The spiritual significance of Christmas remains the message of humanity and of love for all.
The birth of Jesus Christ that we celebrate on Christmas Day opens the way for the liberation of humanity with the new teaching of universal love, tolerance and understanding that He has given to the world.
The birth of Christ also symbolizes a very deep and meaningful truth of the spiritual life. Indeed, for us as Christians, Jesus Christ is the very personification of the Godhead.
It is also because he was born in a time when ignorance, superstition, greed, hatred and hypocrisy reigned in the land, purity forgotten and morality neglected.
Therefore, Christians around the world often look forward to correcting these societal evils on Christmas and to celebrate the day not only with our family and friends, but also to do good even to strangers.
Indeed, Christmas is the time to show love to all around us and to rejoice because the Savior of the world is born. This philosophy is so ingrained that even when one has to work, it is seen as a punishment and a refusal to rejoice and be with family and friends.
Unfortunately, Christmas this year will be celebrated under different circumstances. It was the year in which we experienced the new global pandemic – COVID-19 – that restricted our movement in many ways.
Just as the world celebrated the discovery of vaccines to deal with this deadly pandemic, it was struck by the news of the discovery of a new variant of the disease in the UK and other countries.
We certainly cannot celebrate Christmas the same and the same way we are used to. It will be celebrated with caution, because if we celebrate without the required safety protocols, it could have dire consequences not only for us as a family, but for the country as a whole.
Therefore, we remind everyone to continue to adhere to safety and health protocols to stay safe and free from the deadly pandemic.
At the same time, we are also convinced that the Christmas message cannot be lost to us in these difficult times in our national life. After a very competitive general election, we believe that the Christmas message of peace, love, tolerance, understanding and hope cannot be desired.
The need for our political actors to keep together this dear country of ours in unity, peace and progress is particularly important. After all, we are one people, with a common destiny, and as we celebrate Christmas we must not lose sight of this, but strive to be stewards of each other.
We do not expect a Ghanaian to celebrate Christmas in bitterness or in a way that undermines the peace and stability of the country. Let’s celebrate the season with love and hope for a better future.
The Daily Graphic reminds everyone that Christmas is about forgetting yourself and thinking about those who don’t have Christmas and want our love and care. It also means letting go of our comfort zones to respond to those who need help and desire the message of peace, love and hope.
