Norrie reached a record world ranking of 48 at the beginning of the month

British number two Cameron Norrie is absent from the Miami Open after being defeated in the first round by 4-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-3 by Australian Jordan Thompson.

Norrie, ranked 26th higher than his opponent in 51st place, took the first set but was eventually revised as Thompson avenged his loss to the US Open 2018.

This is a second consecutive first-round loss to Norrie after a premature exit at Indian Wells.

His compatriot Dan Evans will play Tunisian Malek Jaziri later on Thursday.

Evans is the beneficiary of a lucky spot for the losers in the draw after his defeat against Kazakhstan's Alexander Bublik during a bad-mood qualifying match on Wednesday.
