World No. 1 Naomi Osaka played three sets with 141-seeded Yanina Wickmayer to qualify for the third round of the Miami Open.
The seeded Japanese Osaka, who enjoyed a first-round exemption, beat the 6-0 6-7 (3-7) 6-1 qualifier.
Osaka, 21, struck 14 aces and saved five of the six break points for a meeting with Taiwan's Hsieh Su-wei.
"In the second set, I was very moved, so in the third, I just tried to dispel my feelings," Osaka said.
"I had to work hard there."
Osaka failed to defend his title at Indian Wells earlier this month after being beaten in the fourth round by Belinda Bencic.
She looked comfortable against Wickmayer, although she needed two hours and nine minutes to win.
Earlier, Australian World Number 40 Ajla Tomljanovic beat the ninth seeded Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka 6-3 6-4.
Champion of Indian Wells Bianca Andreescu continues his good form with a victory in two sets against the American Sofia Kenin.
Canada's Andreescu, who had to earn a point in her opening match against Irina-Camelia Begu, defeated Kenin 6-3 6-3.
Andreescu could then face Angelique Kerber in a rematch of the Indian Wells final, if it beat the Czech qualifier Karolina Muchova.
Serena Williams and Simona Halep start their campaign at the Miami Open later Friday.
