Michael Owen said he thought Liverpool would continue to play for the title by scoring the three points against Chelsea on Sunday.

The men of Jurgen Klopp – who could tackle behind Manchester City if they can draw with or beat Crystal Palace – have the chance to stay in the race with the victory over the Blues.

Both sides turned their attention to the European competition this week, with Liverpool take a 2-0 lead over Porto in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final before Chelsea face Sparta Prague in Europa League on Thursday.

Owen, who has two more days to prepare for Sunday's clash, will also benefit from not moving away from Merseyside for his midweek meeting.

"Liverpool have a two-goal lead over Porto on Wednesday and I think he can retain his title against Chelsea even though the Blues have an excellent recent record at Anfield – unbeaten for six years in the Premier League and 2-1 winners in the League Cup earlier in the season, "said the former striker.

"Chelsea are in action in the Europa League in Prague on Thursday after easily eliminating West Ham on Monday night with another Eden Hazard masterclbad.

"Liverpool will have 48 hours more to get ready for the game and I'm waiting to see the Reds – unbeaten at their last 37 PL games at Anfield – keep the points."

Liverpool should bring back midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum after leaving the Dutch off mid-week, while Eden Hazard could be rested during Chelsea's trip across the continent.
