VICTORIA (NEWS 1130) – Despite the treatment and education needed to fight badually transmitted infections, a University of Victoria microbiologist says infection rates are rising and people just do not understand the message.
Caroline Cameron explains that infections such as syphilis can have subtle symptoms, but lead to the death of newborns or the death of babies shortly after birth.
Other STIs even come to the point where they can no longer be treated.

"Gonorrhea is approaching drug resistance. Some strains can still be treated with antibiotics, but others have developed multiple antibiotic resistance and this is a big problem, "Cameron says.
She says that STIs that have effective treatments are also increasing.
"There are other diseases like syphilis that can still be cured with penicillin treatment, and yet these cases are increasing," she says. "So even if it's easy to treat, it does not eliminate the problem."

Cameron says that more than a million people are infected with an STI every day.
The latest BC Center for Disease Control report indicates an increase in gonorrhea and chlamydia. Syphilis rates are relatively stable, but increase in men.
Cameron will chair the 2019 World Congress on STIs and HIV to be held in Vancouver starting July 14.
